A brief about author Indrani Ghosh
In the fourth decade of her life, IT professional Indrani Ghosh decided that she needed something more out of life and tried her hand at writing. She realised that she needed to tell everyone her story, but in a way that people would read it. So, she became a part-time writer. She started with blogs and then gradually wrote short stories, and a novel which is yet to see the light of the day. She also love writing stories for children.
The Interview:
How long did it take to get your first novel / book published?
It took more than a year to get my first book published. The process of contacting publishers, sending proposals takes time. Post this, it is an exhaustive process of editing, rework, and finalizing the book.
What mistakes did you make with the publishing of your first book which you try not to repeat?
I think I was too focused on finding a traditional publisher for my book. Self-publishing is a great option and allows many authors to let their work reach the public.
Can you focus on working on two books or stories at the same time?
I do start multiple stories sometimes, but ultimately I end up working on a single story. When you write a novel, the characters become very real for you and you end up thinking about them all the time. So, it is rather difficult to write multiple stories concurrently.
Is there a modus operandi you follow and formulate before you actually start writing your next book?
Not really. It is all about a story idea coming to me and then building on that. Ideas can come from multiple sources and life is the greatest source of stories. A conversation, a movie, a line from a book – a story idea can be triggered from any of these.

Does the writer’s block actually exist? Any tips you would give to come out of it.
It does exist. Sometimes, you hit a wall and you do not know how to find your way out of it. What works for me is to leave that story for some time, and concentrate on something else. Then when you go back to it, you have a fresh mind and can think of ways to progress.
What was the book that most influenced your life, and why?
The book that most influenced me is “Gone with the wind” by Margaret Mitchell. I read it quite early on in life and it was the first book that had a character with shades of grey. Beautifully descriptive and full of life lessons, it is something that has often helped me in real life.
